Kindred

Auth : Octavia E. Butler
This book is set in 1976, but it feels like it could be set in todays times. Dana is an African American woman moving into her new home on her 26th birthday, but in an instant is transported to early 1800’s Maryland. One second she’s in her living room and the next she’s in a far away land watching a young child drowning.

Like any person with a heart she runs into the water to save this young boy only to find a shot gun aimed at her after saving his life. His father, a slave master, distrustingly ready to end her life assuming she put his son in danger.

Little did she know that this boy is the key to her own life and that of her own ancestors.

If science fiction and time travel piques your interest. This may be the next book on your list. I have to warn you that the pain through some of the scenes was visceral. Butler’s writing was highly sensory, I felt like I could taste, smell and tactically feel what she described.

The end left me a little bummed, because I didn’t feel there was a resolution, so if you despise cliffhangers this one is not for you.
